How Do Pregnancy Tests Work?

Can I Order the Abortion Pill Online?

Just because you can do something, doesn’t mean you should. While you can order the abortion pill online, there are a few things you should know before you make this potentially dangerous choice.

Ordering the Abortion Pill Online

Yes. You can order the abortion pill online through a telemedicine process now offering abortions by mail; however, this process could lead to some dangerous, long-term health risks.

Wondering if it’s the right pregnancy option for you? Keep reading for some potential side effects and risks of self-administered abortions and steps you should take to put your health and safety first.

Risks of ordering the abortion pill online:

1. Online ordering of the abortion pill is not meant for everyone

*Not advised for women who have anemia, bleeding disorders, liver or kidney disease, seizure disorder, acute inflammatory bowel disease, or use an intrauterine device (IUD).

2. This process neglects vital pre-abortion tests and screenings

Ordering the abortion pill online seems to make the abortion process more convenient for women. However, this can lead to women not taking the necessary steps to ensure the abortion pill is right for them.

Screenings like ultrasounds and STI testing help determine if there are any medical conditions that may impact the abortion process and lead to infections or hemorrhaging. Without taking these steps, women may take the abortion pill when it’s not safe for them to do so.

3. The abortion pill will only work in the first 10 weeks of pregnancy

Many women who self-administer the abortion pill do so without knowing how far along they are. Because the abortion pill is only effective in the first 10 weeks of gestation, the process may be ineffective or lead to an incomplete abortion if taken too late in pregnancy.

Getting an ultrasound will verify the pregnancy due date and will help you and your doctor know if the abortion pill is right for you.

4. Ordering the abortion pill online can lead to using untested medications

How many times have you ordered something online, only to realize it’s not what you meant to buy? Unfortunately, the same can be true of ordering the abortion pill online. Fake pharmaceutical websites posing as legitimate abortion pill providers are selling abortion medication that hasn’t been approved by the FDA and may not be safe for consumption.

5. Self-administered abortions lack necessary medical supervision

The FDA warning reads that the abortion pill can cause “serious and sometimes fatal infections or bleeding.”  Without access to medical supervision and emergency medical care, infections or bleeding caused by abortion pill complications could go unnoticed and untreated.
