Roe v. Wade Overturned: Separating Fact From Fiction
On Friday, June 24, 2022, the Supreme Court overturned Roe vs. Wade. The response to this decision was felt all across America and met with a spectrum of emotions. Some cheered for joy when they heard the news. Others cried out in anger and fear for the future.
Many have taken to social media and blogs to discuss what the future of abortion will look like. But some of these stories are completely false. So how can one separate fact from fiction?
Keep reading to better understand what this reversal actually means, what it affects, and how to remain calm when unsettling claims circulate in your newsfeed.
The Path Forward
When Roe vs. Wade was originally decided in 1973, The Supreme Court ruled that a woman’s right to abortion was implicit in the right to privacy and that the right to privacy is protected by the 14th Amendment. On June 24, 2022, the Court ruled that the previous decision was in error and that the Constitution does not confer a woman’s right to abortion.
Because of this decision, the authority to regulate abortion was returned to the states and their elected representatives. This means each state now has the authority to decide how and if abortions should be performed.
Procedures Still Available
Here’s a glance at what is not changing and the procedures that will still be available for all women after the reversal of Roe vs. Wade.
Ectopic Pregnancy
Women who are diagnosed with an ectopic pregnancy will still be able to have their pregnancy removed. An ectopic pregnancy occurs when the fetus begins to grow outside of the uterus. This type of pregnancy is not viable and requires physician oversight to protect the health of the woman.
Maternal Priority
In the past, abortion was allowed for cases in which the expectant mother’s life was in danger. Imagine a woman becomes pregnant but then learns she has cancer. A choice of termination will continue to be available to women who find themselves in life-threatening situations.
