Why Do I Need An Ultrasound?

Pregnant and considering abortion? Getting an ultrasound beforehand is vital to understanding your pregnancy details. This simple scan will give you the information you need to stay safe. You are not alone as you navigate an unexpected pregnancy.

Learn the Age of Your Pregnancy

Did you know medical abortion (also known as the “abortion pill”) is only FDA approved if your pregnancy is ten weeks gestation or less? If you seek this type of abortion and your pregnancy is older, you’re at a greater risk for serious complications.

An ultrasound is the only reliable way to confirm how far along you are in your pregnancy, which you’ll need to know before an abortion to protect your health. A positive pregnancy test cannot tell you all the details needed to move forward with a pregnancy decision.

Determine the Location of Your Pregnancy

Typical pregnancies attach and grow inside the uterus. On rare occasion, this process happens outside the uterus. This is known as an ectopic pregnancy and it’s a life-threatening condition requiring medical attention.

An ultrasound can reveal the location of your pregnancy to rule out or confirm an ectopic pregnancy. If you’re experiencing one, you’ll need emergency medical treatment, not an abortion.

Confirm the Viability of Your Pregnancy

Roughly 26% of pregnancies end in miscarriage, and an ultrasound can reveal whether you’ve had one. If you’ve had a miscarriage, you’ll need other treatment than an abortion.

This is important since experiencing a miscarriage isn’t always obvious, so you may have had one without knowing it.
