What Are the Risks of Ordering the Abortion Pill Online?
Abortion is a serious physical and emotional medical decision. Despite the convenience of ordering the abortion pill online, you should be aware of the side effects and potential risks. Be mindful of what to expect before you buy online.
What Is The Abortion Pill?
The abortion pill is also known as a medical or chemical abortion. This method terminates a pregnancy with two different drugs, mifepristone and misoprostol.
Every pregnancy needs the hormone progesterone to grow and develop. Mifepristone, the first drug you take, blocks progesterone to end the pregnancy. The second drug, misoprostol, causes uterine contractions to expel the pregnancy from your body through cramping and bleeding.
According to the Mayo Clinic, the side effects of medical abortion can be nausea, vomiting, fever, chills, and diarrhea. An incomplete abortion, heavy and prolonged bleeding, cramping, and infection are all possible risks.
What Do I Need to Know Before Ordering the Abortion Pill?
The FDA has approved the abortion pill method to end a pregnancy through 10 weeks of gestation (70 days or less since the first day of a patient’s last menstrual period).
Sometimes it can be difficult to know when you first got pregnant. However, when taking the abortion pill, you need to know how far along you are in your pregnancy for your health and safety.
Do you have an ectopic pregnancy? Although rare, an ectopic pregnancy is one that’s located outside of the uterus. It’s extremely dangerous and can even be life-threatening if left untreated.
The abortion pill does not end an ectopic pregnancy, instead another form of treatment would be needed.
The Mayo Clinic states that up to 20% of known pregnancies end in a natural miscarriage. You can still get a positive pregnancy test result days or weeks after a miscarriage. This may require another form of treatment as well.
How Do I Get The Information I Need?
At Mendo Lake Women’s Clinic, we offer a no-cost medical consultation.
At our Clinic, you can meet with a Patient Advocate and take a urine pregnancy test administered by a registered nurse (RN). If the test is positive, a sonographer may perform a no-charge ultrasound.
Ultrasound lets you know whether you qualify for the abortion pill method by giving you the following information:
- If your pregnancy is viable (growing) or if you have had a miscarriage
- How far along you are in your pregnancy (gestation)
- The location of your pregnancy (to screen for ectopic pregnancy)
